Skip the fries

September 17, 2011 // Posted in Eating Out, Healthy (Tags: , , , ) |  Comments Off

Went to Five Guys and had a burger. I know they brag about their fries – the peanut oil and all. But I really can’t eat fries any more. Doctors orders. I really have to get these last 8 pounds off my butt and thighs. It’s embarrassing. I blame the fries for that and this has to stop. So, no fries and a lot more lettuce and celery.

Kool Aid

Today’s kids seem to be drinking carbonated sodas as their daily drink and refreshment. I know that when I was a kid we rarely drank sodas. I don’t think my parents ever even bought any soda at the grocery store to keep at home.

We were allowed to drink milk, orange juice, Kool Aid and iced tea. As a treat we might get lemonade or apple juice. I think the only time we ever drank sodas was when we were taken to McDonald’s for a treat of a hamburger, fries and coke.

That was a big deal and only for special occasions. Now, kids eat at McDonald’s and other fast food places every day. No wonder they are fat.

Soup

I have never really been a fan of soup. There are a couple that I can tolerate once in a while, like Beef with Barley and Chicken Noodle, but I see these as comfort food for when you are sick and who wants to eat something that reminds them of being sick, not me!  I do cook with soup on occasion. I like pouring Cream of Chicken and Cream of Mushroom over chicken breasts and baking it for 35 minutes at 350 degrees, served with rice and a veggie. If you haven’t tried it, I would suggest trying it some time, it is fast and easy and healthy and it always comes out great tasting.

Back To Work

The Labor Day weekend is now done and over with and the summer months are coming to an end. We had nice weather for the 3 day long holiday weekend. I got to spend a few hours and the local flea market. I love going there, the people are nice, I usually find a few treasures that I can’t live without that I end up purchasing and bringing back home along the way. It’s nice to be able to spend a few hours outside, it’s good exercise and you never know who you are going to meet there or run into that you haven’t seen in a while, so it’s a win, win situation all the way around.

Jerky

Everyone has seen Slim Jims at the store. All the convenience stores carry Slim Jims and one or two other brands of beef jerky.

So I read about other kinds of jerky and had no idea that in other parts of the country there are different jerkies. For example, in the west, you can buy buffalo jerky or bison jerky. I wonder if that jerky tastes like the Slim Jim made from beef jerky?

In the southwest, you can buy jerky made from rattlesnake. I had no idea that people were harvesting rattlesnakes and using their meat for commercial purposes. I wonder it it tastes good?
